Emmanuel Lewis might seem like the punch line to a joke now, but admit it: As a kid you were terrified by that Webster episode in which he nearly burned the house down with his chemistry set. After years of popularity, the show was unceremoniously canceled in 1988. So what has the pint-size superstar been up to since? In other words, where's Webster?
Having successfully gone head-to-knee with the show's co-star, one-time Detroit Lion Alex Karras, and having earned pop idol status in Japan with his hit single "City Connection," Lewis decided to get an education. Although both a computer and karate enthusiast, he decided what he really wanted to do was learn about theater production. In 1997, he graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a degree in theater arts.
Considering the tribulations that former child stars like Gary Coleman and Danny Bonaduce have endured, Lewis has kept an admirable low profile. Indeed, when he does surface in his Peachtree City, Ga., neighborhood, it's either been to promote a charity event or to enjoy a meal at one of the local restaurants.
In 1999, for instance, Lewis acted as the MC for a performance by the students of Atlanta singing coach Jan Smith to benefit victims of the Columbine High School shootings. Earlier this year, Lewis took part with boxer Evander Holyfield and singer Faith Evans in the Atlanta Celebrity Pool Challenge for Charity, sinking eight balls opposite champion pool player Johnny Archer.
While Lewis had a good sideline going during the '80s chaperoning Michael Jackson to award ceremonies, his circle of friends has since become more select. One of his best buds, in fact, is Family Ties' Marc Price, better known as Skippy. Price himself has become a popular nightclub comedian, and Lewis occasionally accompanies him on tour and radio appearances.
This led to a humiliating episode at the 1998 Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, when Lewis and Price tried to crash a Comedy Central party. Security escorted them off the premises. Partygoer Ben Boucher told one message board, "I never thought I would ever have been invited to a party that Skippy and Webster weren't cool enough to attend. Hell, they even allowed ex-Monkee Mickey Dolenz in!"
The last laugh, however, is certain to belong to the now 30-year-old Lewis. Last year he set up his own music label, Emmanuel Lewis Entertainment, and during a recent appearance on The Queen Latifah Show seemed quite content with his lot. After all, this is a man who had a No. 1 hit in Japan when he was barely out of short pants. Oh sorry, he's still wearing them
