Barbara Ellington from the Gleaner, interviewed Dionne Warwick who was recently in Jamaica as the special guest of the Organisers of the Actor Boy Awards. A newspaper article was posted in today’s Sunday Gleaner, May 31 2002, relating to the aforementioned interview.
Dionne Warwick who has staked up over 40 albums is currently on tour and is also working on her new album. She will be touring several west coast cites in the United States in April and will be performing in South Africa in May.
Dionne decided that her next project would be an album with remakes of a number of her own favorite hits which, she explained, will be released in November to coincide with her 40th anniversary in the music business. She plans to duet with her first cousin Whitney Houston and other musical legends such as Michael Jackson, Gladys Knight, Sir Elton John, Pastti Labelle and Luther Vandros.
Dionne was questioned about Whitney’s health and well being and about the speculations evoked because of her cousin’s absence from Liza Minelli’s recent nuptials. Miss Warwick told the interviewer that Whitney was working on her upcoming album in the studios in Florida. She said that Whitney has a lot of love and support around her and that everything is going to be fine. Miss Warwick thanked Jamaicans and others everywhere for their prayers and asked that people continue to pray for her full recovery.
Miss Warwick, who has been living in Brazil for the past eight years, is widowed. She explained that gospel music was her foundation and that Diana Washington, B.B. King and Nat King Cole was among some of her early influences. She went on to explain that she continues working with a character building program for young women known as “Best Friends”, which is the brainchild of General Collin Powell, and about her past duties as the U.S. Ambassador of Health.
This year marks her 40th anniversary in the business and a host of celebrations, television specials and events to honor her have are scheduled which will culminate with her getting a lifetime achievement award.
Seguro que a todos os suenan canciones como "That's What Friends Are For" o "Say a Little Prayer".
