JACKSON'S 'INVINCIBLE' MAY STILL LIVE UP TO TITLE, SAYS BAYER SAGER/JOHN TURTURRO TOUTED FOR 'MONDAY NIGHT' PERFORMANCE AS COSELL
Though music industry pundits are positing that Michael Jackson's "Invincible" is going down as a disappointment, such is hardly the case -- if you listen to the self-named King of Pop's longtime friend and sometimes songwriter Carole Bayer Sager.
"I think the album actually did more than they thought it would at the beginning. It's been in the top 10 -- and huge in England, monstrous all through Europe. I think Sony is very pleased. There are still some great singles to be released," opines Sager, who cowrote the cut "You Are My Life" -- and to whom Jackson dedicated the undeniably fine "Invincible."
"How big the album ultimately is will depend on how many singles they decide to release and how much he feels like supporting it. Michael goes to his own drum," she adds. "There are artists who just do what they do."
Aye, there's the rub. Jackson's support of his $30 million "Invincible" has so far consisted of his two New York comeback concerts, the CBS special taken from those concerts, and little else. Reports have had it that he'll tour, but as of now, nothing is set. Bayer Sager has heard he's considering some 30 dates. But will he, and if so, when? ...
Adds Carole, "He's shown that he still has everything he did when he made 'Thriller' -- the showmanship, the dancing, the musicality. He has some amazing videos coming up, and I'm sure he'll do some extraordinary promotion because he worked so hard on the album."
If nothing else, the paparazzi will probably see Jackson at Liza Minnelli's wedding in March, along with Elizabeth Taylor.
