Described by LA legal newspapers as "arguably the hottest defense lawyer of the moment," "seemingly unbeatable" Mark Geragos is the lawyer The King Of Pop has standing by him in these latest allegations against the singer. Geragos is a flamboyant lawyer with multiple high-profile cases on his résumé. It was in a pretrial hearing for another client that Geragos first got word of the raid at Neverland on November 18th.
He is currently defending Peterson, a California man charged with the murder of his pregnant wife. Previously Geragos defended Winona Ryder when up against shoplifting charges. Prior to her, his clients include Gary Condit, Roger Clinton and Nate Dogg. Mr Geragos is a legal consultant for MSNBC, FOX News and CNN. Making numerous television talk show appearances as a legal expert.
One might say that Geragos is the celebrity of celebrity defenders. One thing is certain, Geragos has experience working under the focus of an enormous spotlight.
The 45-year-old Loyola Law School and Haverford College graduate has been practicing criminal law since 1983 in a small Los Angeles firm with his father Paul Geragos.
Geragos came to prominence in the late ´90s when he defended Susan McDougal, the jailed Whitewater defendant accused of obstructing justice during the Bill Clinton Presidency. He not only won her acquittal in two trials, but one was unrelated to Whitewater. He also negotiated her Presidential pardon. He then went on to represent Clinton´s brother, Roger, against drunk-driving charges. Geragos convinced a judge to dismiss all alcohol-related charges. It was 2001 when Geragos won the dismissal of kidnapping, domestic abuse, battery and terrorist threats charges against Nate Dogg. Condit, the former congressman suspected of killing Washington intern Chandra Levy was his next case. Condit was never charged.
As a result of his high profile cases, Geragos has gained continuous exposure in the press, something he denies enjoying.
Jackson fans and supporters are concerned that the lawyer´s workload will prove too much and not allow him to adequately defend the singer. Geragos who could be considered a workaholic insists he is capable. "It is not much different than what I normally do except there is more dealing with the media," Geragos stated. "There´s a reason I get up in the morning and run three to six miles every day and lift weights at night. If you´re a trial lawyer, it doesn´t get much better than this."
Geragos, recently named Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Los Angeles Criminal Courts Bar Association, says Peterson´s mother is "happy for Michael Jackson that he gets to have me defend him also."
Outside his courtroom experience, Geragos is quite an entrepreneur. The lawyer has launched several Web sites relating to the law or finance, including MagnaBand.net, TheJusticeSystem.net, VoteAcrossAmerica.com and ItsAboutFinance.com.
