Michael's Plastic Surgery Secrets
January 27, 2003
He's sold millions of records and packed countless concerts, but MICHAEL JACKSON's affinity for plastic surgery has distracted attention from many of his professional accomplishments.
Now, insiders tell ET that VH1's "All Access: Skin Deep," airing tonight at 9, is being reworked to remove the section dealing with Michael from the broadcast. In the special, the King of Pop's former doctors speak out for the first time about Michael's skin condition and startling transformation over the years. It is not clear what prompted the last minute editing of the show. When contacted by ET, a spokesperson for VH1 had no comment.
As a solo artist hot off the JACKSON 5 in the '70s, Michael wore a large afro hairdo and had a broad nose. But, in the early '80s, as his solo career took off, his nose seemed to grow smaller, his cheeks grew more defined and his skin tone looked lighter.
"This was an example of someone who did not feel good about his appearance," claims Dr. STEVEN HOEFFLIN, Michael's plastic surgeon for over 20 years. "I performed his first nasal operation some time in the mid-'70s. He did have a nose that was larger than he would've desired, and I think it was appropriate for him to consider surgery at that time."
Hoefflin also claims that he performed work on Michael in the following two decades, including that masculine cleft chin. "He was very happy with his appearance after the work and produced tremendous [material]. I did his nose and a chin cleft and that really was all."
Over the years Michael's appearance continued to evolve, and public appearances in a surgical mask sparked talk that the star was having problems with his nose. Hoefflin, who says the last surgery he did on the King of Pop was in 1998, cannot explain the misshapen appearance of Michael's nose as seen in his most recent court appearances, but speculates that childhood taunts may have influenced Michael's gravitation toward plastic surgery. "He's admitted he was teased when he was younger," reveals the doctor. "Probably everybody could relate to that. He's human like everybody else."
