But singer doesn't make offer on 17,000-square-foot mansion, which his rep says is 'not large enough.'
Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 - Music star Michael Jackson popped into town for a few hours right before Christmas, giving the $45 million Marden estate the once-over.
James Meiskin, head of Plymouth Partners Ltd. and a New York broker who represents Jackson, made the arrangements after seeing stories about the property in the Palm Beach Daily News and the Wall Street Journal.
Broker Nadine House, who showed the property Dec. 23, would not confirm the prospective buyer's identity, but said, "He's shy and was a real gentleman" - calling from his car to apologize for being late on the ride up from Miami.
Jackson arrived with a security team in two vans to see the 22-room, 17,000-square-foot Georgian-style mansion. The house was built in the early 1990s and is situated on 4.6 acres with 300 feet of oceanfront. Designed by architect Charles Harrison Pawley and designer Mark Hampton, it was renovated by New York designer Geoffrey Bradfield and featured in November 1999 in Architectural Digest.
House said her celebrity visitor has not made an offer, but price was not an issue: "The $45 million didn't bother him. He loves the house."
Meiskin said Friday that his client's interest lies in something bigger.
"The house is exquisite, but it's not large enough, if you can believe that," he said. "We're really looking for at least 45,000 square feet. But we haven't begun the process in earnest."
He said they're debating locales and have not focused their search on the Palm Beach market. "It depends on the house, not the location. Only a few houses would work: very special, very private and very large."
The Marden estate is the third-most expensive listing on the Palm Beach market. The highest price tag, $75 million, is for Nelson Peltz's Montsorrel, listed with Ned Monell of Sotheby's International Realty. It has a total of 13 acres and 605 feet of oceanfront, with a 46,000-square-foot main house on 7 acres and an 18,000-square-foot guest house on 6 acres.
But Meiskin shrugged off the property at 545 N. County Road, saying he believes "it's not really on the market. Peltz doesn't want to sell it."
Monell disputed that suggestion. "Nothing could be further from the truth. It's definitely for sale," he said. "Nelson wouldn't waste someone's time, and neither would I."
Meiskin also did not tour Abraham Gosman's nearby oceanfront house at 513 N. County Road, on the market for $55 million, but said that, "for an extra $10 million [above the Mardens' price], that would make more sense" because the house is large enough for his client. The house is on six acres and has a 64,000-square-foot main house and two guest pavilions.
