Connie Chung Makes a Hasty Exit

Mar 26 2003

Major housecleaning at CNN this spring

Don't expect any fond farewell speeches from Connie Chung. CNN has cancelled her prime-time "Connie Chung Tonight," despite its surprisingly good ratings. Connie's show had been temporarily suspended, due to recent war coverage. When Connie pressed the network to get her program back on the air soon, CNN responded by cancelling the show, instead. Although she could have stayed with CNN in some yet to be determined capacity, Connie chose to leave immediately.

Connie's show isn't the first to be axed by the new management team. "Talk Back Live" was cancelled earlier this year. It seems "Talk Back Live," like "Connie Chung Tonight," just didn't fit into the new network plan. Of course this new plan is really just a revival of CNN's old image, one of hard news coverage. CNN has decided to stop trying to be all things, to all people, and just concentrate on what it does best.

While MSNBC has been experimenting with more celebrity talk show hosts, CNN is heading back to what made it successful when first launched. Both MSNBC and CNN have been feeling the heat from the FOX News channel during the past few years, and have been making format changes to compete with the relative newcomer. With steadily climbing ratings, FOX replaced CNN as the #1 cable news channel more than a year ago.

FOX is having good success with strong politically-opinionated hosts such as Bill O'Reilly. MSNBC is trying to follow FOX's lead, but hasn't found just the right personalities yet, while CNN is returning to its roots, straight news. With war coverage a priority for all the networks, now is the time for CNN to make its move.
