MORE JACKO RAPS READY
April 23, 2004 -- LOS ANGELES - Prosecutors want to slap accused child molester Michael Jackson with new charges, sources told The Post yesterday.
Jackson is scheduled to appear next Friday in a Santa Maria, Calif., courtroom, where he'll be arraigned on an indictment handed up by a Santa Barbara County grand jury Wednesday.
Law-enforcement sources said the grand jury indicted the King of Pop on the nine charges originally filed against him on Dec. 18 - seven counts of allegedly committing a lewd act on a minor and two counts of using an intoxicant.
But sources said a new indictment, set to be made public next week, will likely include additional criminal complaints, such as felony child endangerment.
Conviction on any of the lewd-conduct charges could carry a sentence of four, six or eight years in prison, served consecutively or concurrently. A child-endangerment conviction could mean two, four or six years behind bars.
Grand jurors heard three weeks of evidence, encompassing testimony from 25 witnesses, The Post has learned. The testimony included the young boy accusing Jackson. The King of Pop is accused of inappropriately touching a young cancer victim last year, between Feb. 20 and March 10, at his Neverland Ranch home near Santa Barbara. The district attorney investigated Jackson for alleged molestation in 1993, but the case fell apart when an accuser took a civil settlement and kept quiet.
Jackson's New York-based lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, declined yesterday to substantively discuss the case, citing a judge's gag order.
"Michael Jackson is keeping very busy being Michael Jackson and leaving the legal issues to his lawyer," Brafman said. "He has great confidence in his lawyers."
