BERLIN (AP) Michael Jackson made fleeting appearances at a hotel window Thursday, throwing kisses, flashing a victory sign and thumping his hand over his heart from behind a surgical mask.
Fueling rumors that the self-proclaimed King of Pop was traveling with a double, a second man appeared at the window with a large white sheet over his head, wearing an untucked red shirt and black trousers identical to Jackson's.
Later Thursday, Jackson was to receive a Bambi entertainment lifetime achievement award, the focal point of his visit to Germany. The awards are organized by the Burda media company.
Fans keeping vigil outside the Hotel Adlon across from Berlin's landmark Brandenburg Gate blamed the media Thursday for creating an international furor after the pop star held his baby son over a fourth-floor railing two days earlier.
The London and New York tabloids were particularly blistering on Wednesday, labeling Jackson a "Wacko" and a "Mad Bad Dad" even demanding his arrest for reckless endangerment. Berlin prosecutors said no crime was committed and they were not investigating.
"Michael doesn't work with the press and therefore the press tries to take revenge on him," said Marcel Reinhardt, 27, from the east German state of Thuringia.
Reinhardt and other members of the international Jackson fan club Angel got Jackson's attention Wednesday night with one of their signs, which read, "Burn All the Tabloids." Jackson sent an employee down to retrieve the poster, then displayed it from the window where he appeared Tuesday evening with his son Prince Michael II, Reinhardt said.
He also sent down pizza.
The public relations firm organizing Jackson's visit said he wanted to go shopping Thursday at KaDeWe, one of Europe's largest department stores. Jackson was also reportedly planning to visit Prussian ruler Frederick the Great's Sanssouci palace in Potsdam outside Berlin prompting a small group of fans to gather there. But Jackson's publicists later said he would not go to Sanssouci.
On Wednesday, Jackson took his two elder children, Prince Michael, 5, and Paris, 4, to visit gorillas at the Berlin Zoo. He later auctioned off a jacket he wore to last January's American Music Awards for $16,000.
