It's all in place: the spiky songs of frustration replete with staccato rhythms that jam and spar with sassy vocals (often peppered with trademark lusty whoops and howls), and the more sentimental, pensive numbers, topped with either delicate or lush instrumentation and earnestly sung at a stately pace in a voice heavy with lovesickness and idealism. All set in the most perfect, ultra-modern sound that digital technology can provide.
It is Michael Jackson's first studio album in six years, and if "Invincible" sticks to a formula then it is one that set the standard for pop-R&B, if not invented the genre, with Jackson's groundbreaking 1979 album, Off the Wall.
Still, Invincible doesn't merely tout past glories; the sound is updated with hard hip-hop beats on some songs, and throughout, the programming is au courant, state of the art.
Vocally -- his taking advantage of studio tricks aside -- Jackson sounds on top form. There's sheer, wild joy in his voice on "You Rock My World," a chunky rocker complete with those familiar whoops. Warmed and enriched by horns and strings, a chilly strutting beat tops Jackson's more mournful, tremulous rendition of the ballad "Butterflies." The title track is a sharp lament, busy with percussion, but this time, rather than the thrill of fascination or the ache of longing, Jackson doggedly begs for favors.
As with many pop culture leaders -- Madonna instantly come to mind -- Jackson accurately reads the times here, whilst adding his own mark. Formula or not, with Invincible, Jackson reclaims his pop crown and wears it well.
Me gusto la ultima parte!!!
