Zagat Survey, the company that created the popular and influential yearly restaurant and hotel guides, has introduced its first-ever music guide, rating and reviewing the 1,000 Top Albums of All Time. According to a recent Zagat press release, the company surveyed 10,656 participating listeners on over 22 different musical genres across eight decades of recorded music.
In the Pop Vocal (Contemporary) genre, Michael Jackson's landmark Thriller album was given top honors. In the most influential musical artist of the past 80 years, The King of Pop placed 10th, just behind Bruce Springsteen and Frank Sinatra.
"We knew this Survey would be especially challenging since musical taste is so personal and top picks of all time stir passionate arguments," the Zagat release states. "To our delight, participants showcased their tastes with a depth of knowledge that stands up to the most critical musical ear -- these are people who know chapter and verse on their preferred genres and they avidly shared memories and associations that their favorite recordings evoke.
The new Zagat Survey Music Guide sells for $14.95 (US) and is available at bookstores, www.zagat.com, and other retail outlets.
