Electing Mark Latham prime minister would be like putting Michael Jackson in charge of a child-care centre, Liberal backbench MP Alby Schultz said today.
Mr Schultz said Mr Latham had focused on populist issues such as politicians' superannuation since becoming opposition leader so he could fulfil his ambition to become prime minister.
He accused Mr Latham of hypocrisy over his bid to slash politicians' super, saying that he had doubled his own entitlements when he was mayor of Sydney's Liverpool Council in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Mr Latham had also presided over a $15.5 million budget deficit at the council, he said.
"He is the biggest hypocrite in Australia," Mr Schultz told journalists.
"He is talking about standards for us now that he abused when he was in public life as mayor.
"And people are talking about putting him in charge of the country's silverware. It's like putting 'wacko Jacko' (Michael Jackson) in charge of a child-minding centre."
Asked if he had been authorised by Prime Minister John Howard's office to compare Mr Latham to Jackson, who is facing pedophilia accusations in the United States, Mr Schultz said he had not.
But he said he had no regrets about the comment.
"The point I am making is that there are things that you do in life, they carry a certain amount of responsibility, and there's no responsibility in saying one thing and at the same time meaning another and trying to fool people that what you are saying is fair dinkum," Mr Schultz said.
"This bloke has to be fair dinkum. He should stop playing games.
"The Australian public will wake up to him in time I'm sure."
Opposition Leader Mark Latham today said the public would make up its own mind about Mr Schultz.
"It's not what you want to hear as the parent of small children, I've got to say," he told the National Press Club.
"But I understand it's the member for Hume and people can make their own judgment about him.
"I regard that as a bit of a sad reflection."
But Mr Latham, who promised no more crudity when he became Labor leader, defended an opposition backbencher's description of Veterans Affairs Minister Danna Vale as a "flip-flop floozy".
"It sounds a lot more like an exercise in alliteration than some stunning personal insult," he said.
