Dear Guifo,
Hope you remember me, a fan of your art and your vision
I'm wondering about your opinion on the music video for the song In the Closet.
Particularly I'm thinking on why they chose this place to film the video and if the white
building is a church or just a house, made in Spanish-Mexican style? Is it a place
for a date to hide away from people's eyes or woman here is like a demon, full of lust )))
Would be great to hear your vision on this!
Hugs.
Guifo···, thank you so much for your response! I’m so glad to hear from you and your opinion is very important couse you can see some very hidden things. Indeed, this video is very sensual and sexy. However I was kind of confused with the message of the song and the video. From one side it seemed to me that desert is like a test space. You know, like in Bible, when Jesus was tested by Devil in the desert and Devil was trying to seduce him with all kind of things like wealth, fame, lust. But Jesus was strong and he could save his spirit in purity and he proved his love to God. So in this music video, I could see some parallels with this Bible story. Michael is in a desert and he is being seduced by Naomi. Naomi is just unbelievably beautiful and sexy and so attractive. She seems to be more like a dream or illusion, than a real person. She is waiting for him and offering herself to Michael. Michael, however, is hesitating. And, I think, if the building in the video is a church, then he is looking for shelter to save his spirit from sin of lust. Please remember, she is singing about lust, and very little about love:
One thing in life You must understand The truth of lust Woman to man So open the door And you will see There are no secrets Make your move Set me free
Church is old and quite shattered. It’s like a symbol of shattered Christian values. In simple words - he wants her, but there is no love, just lust and lust is a sin and Michael is fighting with his desire. In the end of the video Michael made a “kick dance move” and closed the doors and he stayed inside the church. And it’s like he passed the test and kicked a lust away. )))
It’s just one of the visions of this video. However I’m not sure if building in the video is a church and if it’s a church why it doesn’t have a cross – symbol of Christianity. I was trying to find pictures of Mexican churches and most of them have crosses on the walls or on the roof or in front of the building. If I’m not mistaken, some Baptist churches don’t have crosses. For instance jehovah's witnesses don’t believe in cross and Michael was going to their church for quite a while. Does it have to do something with it? I don’t know. What do you think?
I don’t want to overload Michael with Christianity. But he was very well familiar with Bible and as we know Bible inspired many people and stories from Bible are almost timeless.
I completely agree with your comment about connection between desert and loneliness and also desire. Also I think desert is usually associated with lack of water and thirst. You can see a dry fountain in front of the building and Naomi is staying next to it. )) It’s like she is saying you want me as much you want water in the desert. Come here, I’ll give it to you. ))) But fountain is dry and Naomi has only lust to offer. There is no love and no water. You know? )))
Honestly, I don’t like the line :
One thing in life You must understand The truth of lust Woman to man
Why only woman to man? I think about women a little bit better than that. )))) It seems to me like a Christian view of woman. Adam was seduced by Eve, etc.
Most of them are black and white videos. He was a genius in black and white photography and simply a very nice person. I watched all his videos and loved them all. The one that seemed to me very similar to “In the closet” is video with JLo - "Ain't It Funny": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSLSwwkLRW0
