One shot of Demerol=one night of severe insomnia I occasionally find myself suffering from horribly severe and nauseating migraine headaches that land me in the doctor's office for a lovely shot of Demerol in the butt. It takes generally about ten to fifteen minutes before I feel the full effects of the drug and I must say that although it works wonders on my mood (meaning that it creates a sort of euphoria in me--I'm all smiles for no obvious reason--), it doesn't work THAT well on my overall pain.
I'd say that if I received the shot of Demerol and my pain started out at 10 (as the worst pain ever!), that it would go down to about a three or four, so definitely a lot better, but not totally gone...I can still feel remnants of the migraine pushing their way through the medication. I don't really like Demerol for my headaches even though it works well, because I've found that EVERY SINGLE TIME I've gotten an injection of the drug for my migraine, I've been awake the entire following night, so unable to sleep in fact that it's frustrating. The Demerol makes me feel "loopy" and sort of "dreamy" so I feel like sleeping but when I shut my eyes my head/mind feel all "swirly" and I can't stop thinking about everything that has been happening or that is going to happen...it doesn't leave me with an anxious feeling, but just one of not being able to "quiet" my brain down and stop the sort of "swirling/spinning" in my head when I close my eyes and try to sleep.
I'm sorry if this doesn't make much sense but I don't know how to describe it other than a swirling/spinning sensation going on in your mind when you are trying to get some shut-eye. So basically, Demerol is a decent drug for headaches in terms of pain relief and is helpful in upping your mood, but when it comes to trying to sleep, I find it incredibly difficult to do so when I'm on this painkiller. I don't recommend for those who are already victims of sleep disorders such as insomnia or who have circadian rhy
