:toma: :toma:

Usando a Diana ...

Bashir 'used Diana letter to win over Jackson'

Julia Day
Monday February 10, 2003

Martin Bashir used a private letter from Princess Diana to persuade Michael Jackson to allow him to film a warts and all documentary, it has emerged.

The pop star's friend Uri Geller yesterday revealed in a radio interview on LBC in London that the ITV presenter visited his home as part of his mission to seal the Jackson interview.

"He showed me a very nice letter that Princess Diana had written to him after she did the interview. He also said he would bring justice... I have been around for a long time, but I have learned a very big, big lesson," he said.

Geller, who has known Jackson for five years, recommended that his friend speak to Bashir but now says he regrets his decision.

"He [Michael] feels incredibly betrayed and so did I," he said.

The production of the letter as a means of oiling the pre-interview talks confirms that Jackson believed his public image would be transformed by talking to the same man who persuaded Diana to talk.

But it will also fuel Bashir's critics.

"He made his reputation doing a puff piece for Princess Diana and has traded on it ever since," former footballer George Best said yesterday.

"I once stupidly let him film my wife Alex and me. He said: 'I want to be your friend when you are better.' What rubbish. No one I've spoken to has a good word to say about Bashir. He has got as miuch integrity as a paper bag."

Later this week Jackson will try to recover some of his credibility as the storm over his revelations that he lets young boys share his bed continues to rage.

The pop star hopes to turn the tables on Bashir with his own footage of the ITV presenter in his home.

Jackson said the five minutes of film revealed how Bashir betrayed his trust during the making of Living With Michael Jackson, which he last week condemned as "a gross distortion of the truth".

The footage will be screened on US channel CBS on Wednesday in a one-hour special.

It is said to show Bashir flattering Jackson, complimenting his parenting skills and generally ingratiating himself with the pop star.

"The film shows extraordinary scenes of Martin Bashir praising the way Michael treats children and commenting on how good a father he is.

"Either Martin Bashir was lying to Michael or was misleading his audience in his voiceovers on the film," said a statement issued yesterday on Jackson's behalf.

The former ITV director of programmes, David Liddiment, said today it was "inevitable" Bashir's scoop and reputation as a lone operator would attracting "back-biting".

"It's a pity this has detracted from his achievement. He has taken an American invention - the big celeb news interview - into new, more revelatory and therefore more significant territory. And he has proved that indulging our guilty interest in the rich and famous can also be a perfectly proper role for a current affairs programme," he said.

The former ITV boss, who was at the helm when Bashir first made his approach to Jackson a year ago, added that he didn't think that Jackson's claim that he was deceived would "take up too much of the ITC or the BSC's time". The documentary has been the subject of intense public and media scrutiny since it was screened in the UK a week ago to an audience of over 14 million, with 27 million Americans tuning in to watch it on Thursday.

Yesterday the Mail on Sunday reported that Granada - which sold the show to the US for £3.5m - agreed to pay a portion of the show's profits to a children's charity chosen by the star.
