As promised - a brief summary of why Michael Jackson turned down the opportunity to perform and even appear at the Grammys.
The negotiation regarding a performance had been back and forth, going back to early January. However I cannot dwell on that period due to the lawsuit brought by the AMA’s Producer and founder – Dick Clark against the Grammys.
The reason that Michael finally turned down the Grammys (a few days ago) is THEIR truly bizarre insistence that he could NOT perform ANY new material from Invincible. They were only interested in a greatest hits medley. What the hell you say? You Rock My World was up for a Grammy, and had the album and Butterflies been eligible they too would have surely garned Grammy nominations – what can be the possible justification? Beyond speculation, who knows, but the official reason from the Grammy’s Director was that - the new songs aren’t well enough known and contempory - this certainly stinks, especially in view of the nomination of the same academy of one of the same mentioned songs. I’ll leave you to ponder the Academy’s true reasons and who could have influenced them.
In spite of the problems with Sony, Michael would have performed at the Grammy’s, to give his fans something special, had he been allowed to perform new material. As it was the Academy were simply looking for guaranteed inflated ratings, while for Michael Jackson a performance of old hits would make him appear out-of-touch and stuck in the past. The gossip writers would be quick to say that his new material can’t cut it so…..
Finally, I’ll add the Academy also offered Michael a special award if he agreed to perform or appear. Again he turned this offer down.
