Just another day in SoCal...
I headed out to the First AME Church in LA after 7am this morning, and luckily for me, it was only about 15 minutes away. All I knew was that Michael would be attending Sunday services at the church, but I had no idea when. So I got there around 7:15am, on about 2+ hours of sleep, with a bag of vinyls and camera in hand. I stood around, wondering if any media would be showing up. By the time the 8am service begins, only a only a photographers have come by along with a small camera crew. So I figure that he'll most likely attend the 10 am service.
After 8am, things start happening. Media trucks start arriving, and people start finding out that Michael will be arriving. I find out from a reporter that Michael will indeed arrive for the 10am service, and that he'll be going to a nearby school after the service.
Not too long later, the attorneys start arriving. First Thomas, then Susan, and then finally Brian. All are courteous as they arrive, and then enter the church through a side door next to the parking lot.
By 9am, there are at least 5 or 6 media trucks parked out in front of the church, and I'm starting to feel a bit more excited. I already was, but at this point, I started getting jumpy, knowing that Michael would be arriving soon. At 9:15, his entourage rolls in, led by a white SUV, followed by MJ's Bentley, and two more black SUVs. They head into the parking lot, but sadly enough, I couldn't exactly follow. Not only that, the Bentley parks behind a staircase, so I couldn't even see Michael get out. I just barely get a shot of his arm (with armband) as he also enters through the side door.
I wasn't sure if I would attend the church service, even though Michael would be inside. It didn't feel right, not being of that particular faith, plus being in a house of worship while your mind is on someone seated somewhere in the same room. I talked to the same reporter I spoke with earlier, and she convinced me to go inside, because it really would fun and interesting. So I ended up going inside, and to that end, she was right.
I went inside, and sat on the left side, toward the back, feeling COMPLETELY out of place. Just before 10am, Michael and his crew walk out and seat themselves on the right side, a couple rows back from the front. And so the service begins...
I don't want to get into the service a whole lot. It was really nice and I actually was spiritually moved. As for Michael, he seemed really involved in what was going on. He would stand up when others would stand up, and clap along as well. In the middle of the service, Mez, Randy, Steve Harvey (who came with Michael in his Bentley), and Michael were introduced, and a few nice words were said about them. There was a very favorable response from the congregation, so that was really nice to see.
Just before the serice ended (it lasted for 1 hour and 40 minutes), Michael and his peeps got up and left through a door in the front. I left soon afterwards and went over to the parking lot, where the media had already congregated, waiting for Michael to leave.
And so he did... with media, onlookers, security, and a few fans surrounding his car as he drove out. I got a nice pic of him as he had rolled down his window, but once his car hit the street, I got pushed aside. I ran up the sidewalk a ways, and ran up to his car as it went down the street. I had a my HIStory vinyl box on my, so I waved it at the car. The guy sitting in the front passenger seat asked for it, so I gave it to him along with a silver pen, both of which he passed back to Michael. Not too long later, I got my autograph.
Soon after, as I was still running along side, his window came down and I was able to shake his hand and told him, "We love you, Michael!" What a moment...
His car and SUVs drove to a school a couple of blocks from the church, where they went in, and then proceeded to give a press conference about something or other. People starting gathering outside the school, but no one was really able to see Michael, as the school was somewhere in the back, away from view.
Some of us were let into the gate, thinking that we might get to meet Michael, but after awhile, they told us to head back out.
Anyways, Michael's parade of cars came out again, and Michael greeted people through his window, although it was briefer than before. I wasn't able to shake his hand, but he did see me with my vinyl copy of They Don't Care About Us, and he smiled.
Once he got on the street, he sped off, with a few of us hardcore fans giving chase on foot. I just about died a few long blocks later, but one fan was able to catch him just before he got on the freeway. Yay for him!
Anyways, all in all, a very exciting day, and a great way to start the week just as I'm about to head up to north in short while.
Go Michael!! Whooot!!
