The man in the mirror himself was unmasked Wednesday, and the pictures are pretty surprising.
Michael Jackson was a no show for court Thursday morning on a breach of contract lawsuit against him.
Jackson is one of the world's best-known celebrities. But for years, he has been talked about more for his mystery than his music.
Jackson is often seen wearing a surgical mask. His former publicist says it protects his throat from pollution and germs.
But when Jackson testified in a California courtroom this week, he was unmasked.
A look at his nose revealed that there seemed to be more damage from years and years of facial plastic surgery. (See the The 12 Faces Of Michael Jackson slideshow.)
Temple University psychiatrist Dr. Edward Volkman said Michael is not nuts. Volkman says we all care about our appearance, but Michael's behavior is an extreme version of normal.
"His appearance is his living," Volkman said. "He appears on stage. He's an entertainer. He's also a perfectionist as can be seen in his music videos and his music. You take that degree of perfectionism, you apply that to your appearance and you keep trying to make it better. His tragedy is, each time he does it, he looks worse."
Dr. Volkman said Michael never sees himself as looking good. And perhaps he's cursed by having so much money his doctors never tell him to stop.
Plus, Volkman says Michael has kept performing while many child stars have turned to drugs and worse.
"You're always performing, you don't have a normal experience of the private time to develop your internal sense of self," Volkman said. "Your picture of yourself becomes inextricably jumbled with what you imagine the world's picture of you is."
Volkman said growing up in the public eye stunts your emotional development. He believes since Michael lives on what he calls the Neverland ranch, he may have never really grown up.
And just a few minutes ago, Reuters reported on what it is we're seeing in that picture of Michael Jackson.
They say it's a plaster on Michael's scarred nose, that Michael was wearing pink lipstick, heavily black penciled eyebrows and a beginning goatee-styled beard.
This was the most viewed picture of the day on the Internet.
