The new greatest hits album, which is the fourth to be released in the last 10 years, has been greeted with mixed reactions by the Michael Jackson fan community as many feel it is a pointless release after the successful 'Number Ones' in late 2003. The track listing is far more comprehensive however with it being a double album which will make it more attractive to buyers.
In the UK is debuted far higher than most people expected entering the UK album chart at #2 with sales of 45,527 copies. This is not as good as the normal #1 debut position MJ releases are used to but far superior to HIStory greatest hits which peaked at #15 and especially good when one considers the huge success Number One's had in the UK just 18 months ago - selling over 1.6 million. A number of effect TV adverts were put out for the album at key times which clearly generated interest.
The USA debut is a different story however with a chart entry at an appalling #128. Obviously the album has had a severe lack of promotion in the USA and experience shows that greatest hits album historically don't do very well in the USA compared to the UK.
