'Titanic' Chinese Sales Top 2 Mil. Soundtrack A Hit Both In Taiwan And Mainland China
By ADAM WHITE
LONDON‹"Titanic" continues to set new standards in the entertainment industry. Its latest achievement is in both countries bearing the name China.
The Sony Classical soundtrack album to the movie is now reported to have sold more than 1 million legitimate copies in the People's Republic of China, becoming the first international-repertoire release to achieve this level on the mainland.
In neighboring Taiwan‹which is otherwise known (to the government there, at least) as the Republic of China‹the "Titanic" soundtrack has also sold more than 1 million. As in the other China, no other Western-repertoire release has reached this level before.
"This is history in the making," says Sony Music Asia president Richard Denekamp. "For the mainland, it's the biggest number I've seen as an official, licensed product."
.....................
"One million sales [of the soundtrack] in Taiwan is just astonishing," says Lachlan Rutherford, senior VP of Warner Music South East Asia and an experienced Asia hand. "Yes, the movie is a big part of the story, but Roger and his people were very active with that record. They made it work."
.....................
He confirms that the "Titanic" soundtrack is the first international release to reach 1 million in sales, "at least since I joined the recording industry in 1986."
.....................
In the People's Republic, the soundtrack's million sales are all the more noteworthy because of significant levels of piracy there.
.....................
"I've heard that 30 million illegal copies of the film are in circulation, predominantly in the mainland but also Hong Kong and Singapore," he says, "although that figure could be an exaggeration. Then again, when you know how many pirate CD lines there are in Macau, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China, maybe it's not."
....................
Sony Music artist Michael Jackson is one Western performer who has previously sold well in the People's Republic, says Denekamp, "although I've never seen an official number above 500,000 units."

Michael Jackson Chinese Fans Community
the Michael Jackson Chinese Fans Community (MJCFC) is the base and shelter for these fans to gather together, comfort each other, and keep on going. It's an ultimate fansite and Jackson news center for all the Chinese admirers. Actually, MJCFC is formerly known as MJICOL(Michael Jackson In China Online) and MJDB( MJ Database in China) before these two sites merged together at beginning of 2005, which were set up as early as in 2001 and thus far had about 20,000 registers and over 8,000 active members.
CeSsy and Candy Ho and I, Co-Presidents of MJCFC, are fans of Michael Jackson for over 10 years. Thanks to the internet, it's easier to get information from MJJsource and various news outlets than before, so that fans surely could dig out the truth step by step with their own research; and something like the mess of 1993 will not confuse the fans and drive them mad. However, the biggest challenge for MJCFC is to translate the sea of documents and news at the same time when information breaks because most Chinese fans don't read English and news from Chinese media are considered as very biased. So Team MJCFC has to do anything on their own to make sure the true story is delivered, and everyone work so hard to defend Michael.
Consider the population of China is over 1.3 billion, there are no doubt millions of Michael Jackson fans and supporters on this great land even though Michael has never been to mainland of China (he did go to Taiwan and Hong Kong). People in this country may not know who Elvis Presley is or who the Beatles are, but they do know Michael Jackson, because they always regard him as the biggest western entertainer, dancer and singer. Thanks to Michael in late 1980's, lots of Chinese people started to enjoy western music then. His art is phenomenal and universal, which connects hearts of people who speak different languages or hold different believes.
Whenever his music and videos are played, the ears and eyes are attracted. The sale of Michael's works is huge, but sadly most are pirates. Even so, according to reliable sources, 'Bad' sold over 250,000 copies during first few weeks of its release in China in 1987 and Dangerous sold more than that eventually. Both are among the best selling foreign albums in China. His influences on Chinese youngsters and artists are enormous...
