"In the summer of 1969 I had already been working for a few years as a songwriter and producer at Motown Records in Los Angeles, when Berry Gordy invited some of the staff to see a new group at the Daisy club on Rodeo Drive.
It was the first time I saw the Jackson 5.
My jaw dropped to the floor. I didn´t know how else to respond to seeing Frankie Lymon, James Brown and Jackie Wilson portrayed by the same little cat at the same time. Was that possible? Was that really posible? I was less than 20 feet away from these five young boys from Indiana, and I can tell you right now: Yes. It was the Gospel Truth.
If you ever heard a young entertainer sing his or her heart out once in your life, I don´t care who it was and where it happened, but I guarantee you: the experience was nothing like the night I saw Michael Jackson and his four brothers. When the performance was over, everyone knew they had just witnessed something very special; something just short of a miracle, and as close as you can come to a phenomenon".
Y esto me ha dado una pena...
:
"Michael learned quickly. He was like a sponge, taking in all in. He could take a part I had given him and sing it right back to me; he would also give me a line that was better than the one I gave him. It made me wish other artists were as capable. And he was only 11 years old. At 12 and 13 he became downright scary. No matter how good he thought he was, Michael wanted to be better - to ultimately be the best.
I never thought of Michael as a child. Maybe that was my mistake. To me, he was a total professional who happened to be young and small. When he wasn´t recording in the estudio he would sit behind the cocnsole and draw pictures of me and others while I was working in the control room. (Those sketches are gone, as are a good portion of my master tapes, destroyed in a fire at my Hollywood studio.)
Working with kids made it hard to set break times. Michael would play jokes on the others, or make noises while we were recording, or spit out his drink on Jermaine. That often meant Mike would take off running, with the others in hot pursuit around the studio, sometimes right out the door, with head-phones clanging and microphones swinging. I could get them to calm down but when things got too far out of control my instructions were simple: pick up the phone and CALL PAPA JOE. Joe would say, "Put Michael on the phone." Five minutes later, they were back to work. (Honestly, though, no matter how serious I was, on many occasions I caught myself laughing under my breath.)"
